About Pediomelum californicum (S.Watson) Rydb.
Pediomelum californicum, with the scientific name Pediomelum californicum (S.Watson) Rydb., is a species of flowering plant in the legume family that goes by the common name California Indian breadroot. This species is endemic to California, growing in the chaparral and woodlands of the state's coastal mountain ranges. It is a perennial herb that has either no stem or a short stem that is mostly underground, so the plant itself sits at ground level. Each of its compound leaves is made up of five to seven oval leaflets, which may reach almost 3 centimetres, or 1+1⁄4 inches, long. Its inflorescence is a raceme bearing several blue or purple pealike flowers, each around one centimetre, or 2⁄5 of an inch, long. The fruit this plant produces is a hairy, oval, beak-tipped legume pod that grows up to one centimetre, or 2⁄5 of an inch, long, and holds smooth, kidney-shaped seeds.
