About Paykullia maculata (Fallén, 1815)

Paykullia maculata (Fallén, 1815) is a small fly species that reaches an adult body length of 5–6 millimetres (0.20–0.24 inches). Adults of this species are highly variable, particularly in body size and the patterning of their wing markings. These small flies have a shining black body covered in bristly hair. The apical half of their wings has darkened veins and a darkened costal area. This species is distributed across most of Europe, and it has been recorded in Austria, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Its typical habitats include wetlands, woodlands, parks, and gardens.
