About Pavonia lasiopetala Scheele

Pavonia lasiopetala Scheele is a species of flowering plant in the mallow family, with common names including Texas swamp-mallow, Wright pavonia, and rock rose. It is native to Texas in the United States, and to Coahuila and Nuevo León in Mexico. This species is a shrubby perennial herb that grows up to 4 feet tall. Its alternately arranged leaves have toothed or lobed edges, and reach up to 2.5 inches in length. Its flowers have five red or pink petals, and bloom from June through the fall months. The flowers are attractive to hummingbirds, and many types of animals including livestock feed on the plant. Within its native range, it is included in seed mixes used to establish vegetation on rangeland. It is also cultivated for use as a flower in gardens and landscaping, and has the capacity to become weedy.
