Patis racemosa (Sm.) Romasch., P.M.Peterson & Soreng was previously known as Piptatherum racemosum. It is a grass species commonly called black-fruited mountain ricegrass, or simply mountain ricegrass. This species is native to the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. It is a conspicuous, easily identifiable grass that has broad, shiny cauline leaves and large spikelets with long awns. It grows in dry or mesic forests and woodlands.
