About Parus holsti Seebohm, 1894

The yellow tit, also called the Taiwan yellow tit or Formosan yellow tit, has the scientific name Machlolophus holsti (formerly Parus holsti Seebohm, 1894). It is a bird species in the family Paridae, and it is endemic to central Taiwan. Its natural habitat is montane temperate forest. This species has a restricted range and a small population, which is declining because wild bird traders capture large numbers of the birds for export. As a result, the IUCN has classed it as Near Threatened. Before 2013, the yellow tit was grouped with many other species in the genus Parus. It was moved to the genus Machlolophus after a 2013 molecular phylogenetic analysis found that the members of this new genus formed a distinct clade. The yellow tit is 13 cm long. It is mostly yellow, and has a crest. Both its crest and back are blackish blue-grey.
