Parmotrema tinctorum is a lichen that typically grows to between 3 and 30 centimeters in diameter. It forms broad lobes that are 10 to 20 millimeters wide, which are dull, smooth, and slightly shiny gray in color. The lower surface of the lichen is black, with bare brown-colored areas, and has a central cluster of simple rhizines. Parmotrema tinctorum has a global distribution, with the majority of recorded samples coming from North America and Europe.
