About Pareronia ceylanica (Felder & Felder, 1865)

Pareronia ceylanica, commonly known as the dark wanderer, resembles Pareronia valeria in both color and the arrangement of its markings, but can be distinguished by the following features. For males, the upperside has a deeper blue ground color. On the forewing, the terminal black border is generally much broader, and it entirely lacks the transverse subterminal series of bluish-white spots; a small number of specimens have one or two of these spots, but never form the conspicuous series seen in P. valeria hippia. On the hindwing, the terminal black border is very broad, narrowing slightly but distinctly toward the tornal angle, and proportionally this border is even broader than the border on the forewing. The underside matches that of P. valeria. Females closely resemble female P. valeria, but on the upperside, the outer black margins beyond the discal markings on both the forewings and hindwings are proportionally much broader, and the transverse subterminal series of spots that crosses the wing is positioned further from the terminal edge. On the underside, the terminal black borders are broader and darker, and the subterminal series of spots on the apex of the forewing and on the hindwing are either absent, or so heavily overlaid by the dusky brownish black of the terminal margin that they appear very indistinct and blurred. The antennae, head, thorax, and abdomen of both sexes are very similar to those of P. valeria hippia. This species occurs in southern India, the Western Ghats, the southern Andaman Islands, and Sri Lanka.
