Pareas margaritophorus, commonly known as the mountain slug snake, is a small to medium-sized, forest-dwelling snake. The species reaches an average length of 47 centimeters. It has a blunt head that is wider than its body. Its body is typically grey or brown, with a distinct yellow or orange collar. It has black scales, a pale underside, and dark spots on the underside. It has fangs located on its lower jaw, which it uses to remove snails from their shells to eat. This species is distributed across Northeast India, Myanmar, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and China.
