This species was formally described by Randall in 2003. Its known distribution includes Sumatra, Sulawesi, the Philippines, Australia (specifically the Great Barrier Reef), the Solomon Islands, and the remote Lord Howe Island. The maximum recorded length of this species is 7.4 centimeters, or 2.9 inches.
