Paranthrene simulans, commonly known as the red oak clearwing borer, hornet clearwing, or oak clearwing borer, is a moth species that belongs to the family Sesiidae. This species is distributed across eastern North America, ranging from Nova Scotia in the north to Florida in the south, and extending west to Minnesota, Missouri, and Mississippi. The wingspan of adult Paranthrene simulans measures 27 to 40 mm. Adult moths emerge in the months of June and July. The larvae of this species feed on chestnuts and oaks, which includes both red oaks and white oaks. Paranthrene simulans has a two-year life cycle.
