About Paragomphus cognatus (Rambur, 1842)

Scientific name: Paragomphus cognatus (Rambur, 1842). For male identification, the key distinguishing features are the shape of the male cerci, which are appendages at the end of the male abdomen, and the pattern of markings on the thorax. The cerci are thick, truncate, and have divergent ends. In southern Africa, south of 15°S, the shape of the cerci separates this species from other dragonflies. This species occurs in Africa, ranging from South Africa north to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Kenya. Its natural habitats are streams and rivers located across a wide variety of vegetation types, including fynbos, grassland, savanna, and forest.
