About Parachromis dovii (Günther, 1864)

Parachromis dovii, which was first formally described by Günther in 1864, is a cichlid species commonly known by the common names wolf cichlid, rainbow bass, and guapote. This species is native to Central America, and it can be found naturally in lakes, rivers, and streams across Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Parachromis dovii ranks among the largest cichlid species in existence, capable of reaching a maximum total length of 80 cm (equal to 2.6 feet) and a maximum weight of 14 kg (equal to 31 pounds). It is an extremely predatory fish, and the majority of its diet consists of other fish. The species is important to local commercial fisheries, popular as a target for recreational game fishing, and is occasionally kept by aquarists in home aquariums.
