About Parabuthus villosus (Peters, 1862)

Parabuthus villosus, commonly called the black hairy thick-tailed scorpion, is a scorpion species native to southern Africa. Its distribution ranges from the Northern Cape province of South Africa to Namibia. This species is the largest in the family Buthidae, and can grow up to 18 centimeters in length. Its diet may include lizards and mice. Parabuthus villosus is typically active at dawn and dusk, and takes shelter in a variety of different refuges during the day. It looks similar to Parabuthus transvaalicus, another species in the same genus; Parabuthus transvaalicus is more strictly nocturnal, less hairy, and has a distribution that is further east than that of Parabuthus villosus.
