About Parablechnum novae-zelandiae (T.C.Chambers & P.A.Farrant) Gasper & Salino

Parablechnum novae-zelandiae, synonym Blechnum novae-zelandiae, is commonly known as palm-leaf fern or kiokio. It is a fern species native to New Zealand. This fern frequently grows in clay soil on embankments and roadsides. P. novae-zelandiae produces long fronds that can reach 2 meters in length and 50 cm in width. New fronds are pink; they turn green and darken as they mature. Kiokio is edible. Māori bush travellers historically relied on its steamed leaves as food.
