About Parablechnum chilense (Kaulf.) Gasper & Salino
Parablechnum chilense (Kaulf.) Gasper & Salino, also previously classified under the synonyms Parablechnum cordatum, Blechnum cordatum, and Blechnum chilense, is commonly called Chilean hard fern, or costilla de vaca, which translates to "cow's rib" in Chilean Spanish. It is a fern species in the family Blechnaceae. This species is native to Chile, and also grows in neighboring regions of Argentina and the Juan Fernández Islands. Mature plants reach a height of 0.9 to 1.8 meters (2 feet 11 inches to 5 feet 11 inches), and often develop a trunk-like structure as they age. Fertile fronds are more upright and have narrower pinnae than the species' infertile fronds. This plant has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
