About Papaver alpinum subsp. alpinum
This taxon, Papaver alpinum subsp. alpinum, is commonly called the Alpine poppy. It is a short, upright, hairy perennial plant that produces all of its leaves at its basal base. Flowering stems reach a total height of 5 to 25 centimeters, and plants produce several upright, hairy stems. Its flowers are hermaphroditic, radially symmetric, and measure 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter. Petal color is most commonly white to yellow, but can also range from pale to deep orange, or red. This subspecies flowers from July to August. Like all subspecies of Alpine poppy, it has a strong taproot, and its angled upward-pointing root hairs help secure the plant in place. It grows well as a plant for rock gardens.
