About Panstrongylus megistus (Burmeister, 1835)

Panstrongylus megistus is a blood-feeding insect belonging to the subfamily Triatominae. This species is distributed across the Guianas, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. It is an important vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, and is particularly prominent as a vector in Brazil. In addition to feeding on humans, P. megistus is known to feed on birds, rodents, horses, dogs, opossums, and bats. In Brazil, P. megistus is frequently found inside human domestic dwellings, while in the other countries it occurs in, it is largely a wild species. Within Brazil, the range of P. megistus extends from the northeast to the south of the country, an area that corresponds roughly to the Atlantic Forest region, though the species also lives in parts of the caatinga and cerrado ecoregions. In Brazil, the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais host the largest populations of P. megistus. Domestic colonization by the species is rare in southern Brazil. The species was first described in 1835 by Hermann Burmeister, who originally named it Conorhinus megistus. It was recognized as a vector for Chagas disease in Carlos Chagas's original 1909 publication describing the condition. Individual P. megistus insects are typically black in color with red markings.
