Panicum gymnocarpon Elliott is a grass species that can grow up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall, with culms that measure 60 to 130 centimeters (2.0 to 4.3 feet) in length. Its leaves are linear, alternately arranged, and grow 15 to 40 centimeters (6 to 16 inches) long. When the plant produces its inflorescence, the resulting panicles are between 10 and 40 centimeters (4 to 16 inches) long. The plant's spikelets are glabrous, narrowly lanceoloid in shape, and 5.5 to 7 millimeters (0.22 to 0.28 inches) long. Its flower clusters range in color from brown to green, and bloom from July through October each year. In North America, Panicum gymnocarpon is primarily found in the southeastern United States. Its native range stretches from Virginia south to Florida, and extends west to Texas and Oklahoma. Across its entire range, this species is classified as an obligate wetland species. It grows in a variety of wetland habitat types, including swamps, areas with seasonally flooded soils, stream and lake banks, and wet woodlands.
