About Palmadusta humphreyii (J.E.Gray, 1825)
Description: These are quite uncommon shells that reach an average length of 10โ25 millimetres (0.39โ0.98 in). The basic color and pattern of this species are quite variable. The smooth, shiny dorsum surface is white or pale pink with many brown spots. The edges and extremities of the shell are orange, with darker spots that extend to the shell's base. The underside of the shell may be orange, pale yellow, pale brown, or pale pink, and features a narrow sinuous aperture with well-developed teeth. In living individuals of this cowrie species, the mantle is bright red. Both the mantle and foot are well developed, and the species has short papillae and external antennae. Distribution: This endemic species is found in waters along East Africa and the Western Pacific Ocean, including locations in Malaysia, Queensland, New South Wales, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Fiji. Habitat: These cowries live in shallow water on coral reefs at depths of 5โ25 metres, typically hiding under coral and rocks, and feed on algae or coral polyps.
