About Palaemon elegans Rathke, 1837
Palaemon elegans Rathke, 1837 is a species of shrimp in the family Palaemonidae, commonly called the rockpool shrimp. It is native to the eastern North Atlantic (including Macaronesia), the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Black Sea. It has also been introduced to the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea. This species is similar to three other species in the genus Palaemon: Palaemon serratus, Palaemon longirostris, and Palaemon adspersus. In some locations, Palaemon elegans has displaced or replaced existing populations of Palaemon adspersus. It is classified as an invasive species in parts of the United States.
