About Palaemon affinis H.Milne-Edwards, 1837

Palaemon affinis H.Milne-Edwards, 1837 is a species of shrimp belonging to the family Palaemonidae. Early authors applied the name Palaemon affinis to specimens that are now recognized to belong to a range of different species. Currently, P. affinis is confirmed to be endemic to the waters of New Zealand. This species was previously thought to exist in many other countries, but it is now only confirmed to occur in New Zealand. Researchers have noted that some specimens found in Australia and subantarctic islands may also belong to P. affinis. It has been proposed that prey abundance is the main factor that controls the distribution of P. affinis. This shrimp lives along shorelines in rocky intertidal zones and estuaries. It is highly tolerant of changes in salinity, and can survive in water with a salinity ranging from 5 to 43%.
