About Palaemon adspersus Rathke, 1837

Palaemon adspersus Rathke, 1837 reaches a maximum length of 70 millimetres (2.8 in), and has a plain yellowish-grey body. The lower half of its rostrum has distinctive pigment spots. Across most of north-western Europe, Palaemon adspersus is an uncommon species. However, it forms the basis of a significant fishery in the Danish straits. In the Baltic Sea, this species can tolerate salinities as low as 5‰, but it overwinters in deeper, more saline offshore waters. In Denmark, Palaemon adspersus is closely associated with Zostera (eelgrass) beds. In areas without eelgrass, this species is replaced by Palaemon elegans.
