About Pagurus liochele (Barnard, 1947)
Pagurus liochele, first described by Barnard in 1947, is a species of hermit crab that belongs to the genus Pagurus, within the family Paguridae. Like all other hermit crabs, members of this genus have an abdomen that is not calcified, and they use gastropod shells for protection. Members of the genus are marine decapod crustaceans, and are omnivorous, though they mostly prey on small animals and scavenge carrion. Two taxa, Trigonocheirus and Pagurixus, were previously classified as subgenera of Pagurus. Today, Trigonocheirus is classified within the genus Orthopagurus, while Pagurixus is now recognized as a separate, distinct genus.
