Paesia scaberula, commonly called the ring fern or mātata, is a lacy, creeping fern native to New Zealand. It grows up to 115 centimetres (45 inches) tall, produces yellow-green fronds and brown stalks, and has a distinctive smell. It is distributed across New Zealand’s North Island, South Island, Stewart Island, and the Chatham Islands.
