About Paeonia lactiflora Pall.
Paeonia lactiflora Pall. grows 50 to 70 centimeters (20 to 28 inches) tall and wide. It produces 9-lobed leaves that measure 20 to 40 centimeters (8 to 16 inches) long. Its flower buds emerge in late spring, which is May in the Northern Hemisphere. These buds are large and round. When open, they become fragrant, cup- or bowl-shaped flowers 8 to 16 centimeters (3 to 6 inches) in diameter. Flowers have 5 to 10 petals that can be white, pink, or crimson, and yellow stamens. This plant attracts butterflies. Its natural habitats include dry open stony slopes, riverbanks, and sparse woodland edges.
