About Paeonia L.
This species of Paeonia L. grows 50–70 cm (20–28 in) tall and wide. It produces 9-lobed leaves that are 20–40 cm (8–16 in) long. Flower buds emerge in late spring, which falls in May for the Northern Hemisphere. The buds are large and round; when open, they become fragrant cup- or bowl-shaped flowers 8–16 cm (3–6 in) in diameter. Flowers have 5–10 petals in white, pink, or crimson, and yellow stamens. This plant attracts butterflies. It grows naturally in dry open stony slopes, riverbanks, and sparse woodland edges.
