About Padogobius bonelli (Bonaparte, 1846)

Padogobius bonelli, commonly called the Padanian goby, is a species of true goby belonging to the family Gobiidae. It is native to rivers located in Croatia, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland. In these areas, it typically inhabits regions with gravel substrates, or along the edges of dense vegetation.

Males of this species grow to a maximum total length of 8.6 centimetres, which equals 3.4 inches, while females reach a maximum total length of 7.5 centimetres, which equals 3.0 inches.

The specific name of this species honors Italian naturalist Franco Andrea Bonelli, who lived from 1784 to 1830. Bonelli originally described the species under the name Gobius fluviatilis, but did not know this name was already in use for a different goby species: the monkey goby, which was described by Pallas in 1814.
