About Oxyopes salticus Hentz, 1845
This species is Oxyopes salticus Hentz, 1845. Adult individuals show color variation, ranging in color from orange to cream and brown. Most adult females have stripes on both the carapace and abdomen; in many specimens, these stripes are more distinct on the abdomen. Individuals typically have a diamond-shaped cardiac mark, and macrosetae covering all four pairs of legs (I through IV). The species also has a characteristically broad clypeus. Adult females measure approximately 5 to 6 millimeters in body size, while adult males measure approximately 4 to 5 millimeters. Its natural range covers the eastern United States, extending south from Massachusetts and Iowa to Florida and Texas. It also occurs along the Mexican border, and north along the Pacific coast to Oregon. Oxyopes salticus is present across most of South America and Central America. Recently, large populations of O. salticus have been discovered on Hawaii’s Big Island and on the island of Maui.
