About Oxychilus alliarius (J.S.Miller, 1822)

This species, with the scientific name Oxychilus alliarius (J.S.Miller, 1822), has a shell measuring 3.5–4 mm by 5–7 mm (0.14 in–0.16 in × 0.20 in–0.28 in). The shell holds four or four and a half slightly convex whorls. The final whorl is often weakly descending near the shell’s aperture. Starting from the third whorl, the whorls are more narrowly coiled than those of Oxychilus cellarius, and the final whorl descends lower than in that related species. The umbilicus is wide, equal to one sixth of the shell’s diameter. The shell surface is smooth, shiny, and ranges in color from weakly reddish to greenish brown. The soft body of the animal is blackish blue. In terms of anatomy, the internal ornamentation of the proximal penis is made up of no more than four longitudinal pleats. These pleats are usually straight, and sometimes slightly wavy, but they are never laterally branched or papillate. This species occurs in a number of countries and islands, including Great Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, and the Czech Republic, as well as in other areas. The eastern boundary of its native distribution lies in western Bohemia, within the Czech Republic. Its non-indigenous distribution includes Latvia, Colombia, California, and New Zealand.
