Ovalipes australiensis, which was formally described by Stephenson and Rees in 1968, is a species of crab with the common names sand crab and surf crab. It belongs to the crab family Ovalipidae. This crab is endemic to southern Australia, with a known geographic range that stretches from Rottnest Island near Perth in Western Australia to the area just north of Brisbane in Wide Bay, Queensland. It also occurs in Tasmania. Individuals of this species are typically found within 100 meters (or 330 feet) of the shore. The species is targeted by commercial fishing, which recorded a total catch of approximately 1.5 tonnes (or 3,300 pounds) in 2019. Recreational fishing of this species has negligible levels.
