Otites formosa (Panzer, 1798) reaches a body length of 5–10 millimetres (0.20–0.39 in). Its head is orange-red, and its large compound eyes are reddish. The mesonotum has four longitudinal black stripes, and the abdomen has three large transverse black stripes. Its wings feature distinctive dark markings. Adult Otites formosa feed on flowers, especially species in the Apiaceae family, while larvae feed on plants, litter, or faeces. This species can be found in Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia, the eastern Palearctic realm, and the Near East.
