About Otala lactea (O.F.Müller, 1774)

Otala lactea, commonly called the milk snail or Spanish snail, is a large edible species of air-breathing land snail. It is a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk that belongs to Helicidae, the family of typical snails. Archaeological findings from the Ancient Roman site of Volubilis in Morocco show that humans exploited O. lactea as early as prehistoric times. This snail species is native to the western Mediterranean Basin, specifically found in the southern Iberian Peninsula, Morocco, Algeria, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Malta, and Corsica. It has also been introduced to the Azores, Madeira, Bermuda, Cuba, southeastern Australia, and the United States, where it occurs in Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas.
