This species has the scientific name Ortygospiza atricollis (Vieillot, 1817). The black-faced quailfinch (Ortygospiza atricollis atricollis) is a common subspecies of estrildid finch found in western and central Africa. There is ongoing taxonomic disagreement about its classification: some taxonomists consider it conspecific with the African quailfinch, while others consider all three relevant species to be conspecific.
