About Orthetrum ransonnetii (Brauer, 1865)

Orthetrum ransonnetii, commonly known as the desert skimmer or Ransonnet's skimmer, is a widespread dragonfly species native to Africa and the Middle East. In Northern West Africa, it is classified as an oasis species. It can be found in desert mountain regions of Western Sahara, Sudan, Niger, Chad, Algeria, Iran, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. It also occurs across Arabia, and is especially common in wadis in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. In 2018, this species was identified from a photograph taken on Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands of Spain. This marked the first recorded sighting of the species in Europe. Orthetrum ransonnetii now breeds in several barrancos on the island of Fuerteventura.
