About Ornithoglossum undulatum Sweet
Ornithoglossum undulatum Sweet is a perennial species that grows from an underground corm, reaching between 5 and 20 centimeters in height. It produces two to four lanceolate, undulated leaves; these leaves measure up to 10 centimeters long and have a blue-grey color. Its flowers are zygomorphic, nodding downward on pedicels, and range in color from white to pink with maroon tips. The flowers give off a fragrance at night, and the species flowers between April and July. This plant most often occurs on rocky terrain, particularly on granite or sandstone slopes. In South Africa, it is distributed across the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, and Western Cape provinces. In Namibia, it occurs throughout the ǁKaras Region, and is concentrated in the Richtersveld and Namaqualand regions. In cultivation, it grows well in well-drained soil that receives only moderate or minimal watering. It prefers full heavy sunlight, a trait adapted to its native desert habitat.
