About Ornithogalum narbonense L.

Ornithogalum narbonense has an average height of 40–50 centimetres (16–20 in), with a maximum height of 70 centimetres (28 in). It produces whitish, ovoid bulbs. Its stems are erect, and its long leaves are fleshy, lance-shaped, and 8–15 millimetres (0.31–0.59 in) wide. It forms a pyramidal raceme that holds 25 to 75 hermaphrodite flowers. Each flower has a long bract that measures 1–2 centimetres (0.39–0.79 in). Each flower has six star-shaped, milky white petals each marked with a pale green central vein. Unopened buds are oval and marked with longitudinal green and white stripes. The six stamens each have a white filament that holds a yellow anther 4 millimetres (0.16 in) long. The flowers of this species are pollinated by insects, and its flowering season runs from May through June. This species occurs in the Mediterranean Basin, Armenia, and northwestern Iran. It grows in fields, grassy dry areas, waste ground, and rocky terrains. In the southeastern portion of its range, it grows at altitudes between 0 and 3,000 metres (0 and 9,843 ft) above sea level, while in Crete it grows at altitudes between 0 and 1,150 metres (0 and 3,773 ft) above sea level.
