About Ornithogalum candicans (Baker) J.C.Manning & Goldblatt
Ornithogalum candicans, commonly called the summer hyacinth, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae. It is native to moist grassland habitats in South Africa, where it occurs in the provinces of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, Kwazulu/Natal, and Eastern Cape. This is a bulbous perennial plant that grows 100 to 120 cm (39 to 47 in) tall. It produces strap-shaped leaves and white snowdrop-like flowers that open in late summer. The species is still widely referenced by its older synonym Galtonia candicans. When it was first formally described in 1870 by Baker, it was classified as Hyacinthus candicans. Ornithogalum candicans has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. For cultivation, it is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 7 through 10.
