About Opuntia repens Bello

Opuntia repens Bello is a small shrub that reaches up to 50 cm (20 inches) in height. It produces yellow flowers and red fruit. Similar to related "jumping cholla" Opuntia species native to the Mojave, Sonoran, and Colorado deserts, it can reproduce via a method that does not rely on seeds: when a stem segment's spines catch on the fur of a large mammal, the segment detaches from the parent plant, and the mammal carries it to a new location where it can grow. This method of propagation is used alongside the more typical propagation from seeds.
