About Opuntia quimilo K.Schum.
Opuntia quimilo K.Schum. is a multi-branched tree with a distinct main stem, growing to a maximum height of 10 meters. Its large, elliptical to oblong stem segments are glossy greenish-grey, and can reach up to 50 centimeters long, 25 centimeters wide, and 2 to 3 centimeters thick. The species produces red or orange flowers that can grow up to 7 centimeters in diameter. Its fruits are pear-shaped to spherical, greenish-yellow, and measure 5 to 7 centimeters long. This cactus is pollinated by bees from the genera Arhysosage, Augochloropsis, Megachile, Lithurgus, Xylocopa, Tetrapedia, and Melipona, as well as bee species Ptilothrix tricolor, Diadasia patagonica, Bombus morio, Apis mellifera, and Polybia ignobilis. It is also pollinated by two hummingbird species: Heliomaster furcifer and Chlorostilbon lucidus. The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List assesses Opuntia quimilo as Least Concern.
