In Africa, it occurs across the continent from Ethiopia to South Africa, and it can also be found on multiple islands in the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few species that have been recorded on the remote Île Amsterdam, which is part of the French Southern and Antarctic Territories. This species has been introduced to the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom.
