About Opistophthalmus pugnax Thorell, 1876
Description: These scorpions have a muddy appearance, and are distinguished by corrugations on the last sternite, stiff setae (hairs), and highly recurved tarsal claws. Males of this species have corrugations on the last two sternites. Adults reach a maximum length of 70 mm. Distribution and habitat: This species constructs a fan-shaped burrow, which includes an enlarged chamber used for resting or eating prey, under rocks and other surface debris. It is a very common species found on rocky outcrops and ridges in the north-central Free State and Gauteng provinces of South Africa.
