About Onychothemis testacea Laidlaw, 1902
Onychothemis testacea Laidlaw, 1902 is a medium-sized dragonfly. It has bottle-green eyes, and a dark metallic-blue thorax marked with citron-yellow. Citron-yellow markings on the thorax include a narrow mid-dorsal carina, a humeral spot, and a narrow stripe on the mesepimeron. Its abdomen is black, also marked with citron-yellow. Segment 1 of the abdomen has a triangular spot on the mid-dorsum. Segment 2 has a small diamond-shaped spot on the mid-dorsum. Segment 3 has narrow yellow markings on its dorsal and sub-dorsal base, plus a stellate spot on the mid-dorsum. Segments 4 through 9 have the same pattern as segment 3, but their lateral spots are much smaller. Segment 10 is entirely black, and the anal appendages are also black. Females of the species look identical to males. This dragonfly breeds in streams located within forests or along forest margins. It is a very fast-flying dragonfly that inhabits forested streams. Males typically perch on dry twigs and similar elevated vantage points over streams, and will aggressively chase other dragonflies that enter their territory.
