About Olisthops cyanomelas Richardson, 1850

Herring cale, with the scientific name Olisthops cyanomelas, is a species of ray-finned fish belonging to the weed whiting group in the family Labridae. This species is endemic to Australia, found along the southern and southeastern Australian coast. It lives in the surf zone of rocky areas that have abundant brown algae growth, ranging down to a depth of 30 meters (100 feet), and it feeds on this brown algae. The maximum recorded standard length of this species is 51 centimeters (20 inches). Herring cale is the only known member of the genus Olisthops, though it has often been classified in the genus Odax instead.
