Oligonicella scudderi Saussure, 1870 is a small, pale brown, stick-like, ground-dwelling species of mantis that reaches an adult length of approximately 35 mm, or 1.4 inches. Males of this species are winged and capable strong fliers; their wings are long enough to completely cover the abdomen. Females of this species are wingless, and they scuttle across the ground while hunting prey. This mantis is distributed in the southern United States, with a range that extends from the Great Plains and Nebraska, south to Texas and Mexico.
