About Okenia amoenula (Bergh, 1907)

Okenia amoenula, commonly called the fiery nudibranch, is a small nudibranch that reaches a maximum length of 20 mm and has a smooth body. It is often overlooked until its egg ribbons are spotted, after which it is frequently noticed in groups. It has a pale body streaked with orange, and its margin features fingerlike projections tipped with yellow-orange that resemble flames. Its rhinophores are white, and its gills are striped with orange. This species is endemic to the South African coast, where it occurs from the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula to Port Elizabeth, ranging from the intertidal zone down to at least 30 m depth. It has also been reported from Angola. The fiery nudibranch is often found living on bryozoans. Its egg mass is a sprawling white curl made of several turns.
