About Oenothera xylocarpa Coville

Oenothera xylocarpa Coville is a species of flowering plant in the evening primrose family, commonly called woodyfruit evening primrose. It is native to the Sierra Nevada of California, with its range extending just into western Nevada. This plant grows in coniferous forest and meadow habitats, most often in soils rich in pumice and other gravel. It is a perennial herb that grows from a thick taproot, producing a flat, dense rosette of hairy, gray-green leaves. It has no above-ground stem, and its showy flowers emerge from among the rosette leaves. Each flower has four bright yellow petals that may be nearly 4 centimeters long, and these petals fade to pink or red as the flower ages. The fruit is a capsule that can be straight, curved, or twisted, and may reach up to 9 centimeters in length.
