About Oeneis alberta Elwes, 1893

Oeneis alberta, commonly known as the Alberta Arctic, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae. Its distribution spans from the Canadian prairie provinces eastward to southern Manitoba. Isolated populations of this butterfly also occur along the Rocky Mountains in the U.S. states of Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. The wingspan of adult Oeneis alberta ranges from 35 to 57 mm. Adults have one generation per year, and are active on the wing from May to June. The larvae of this species feed on bunch grass, and likely feed on species in the genus Festuca. This species overwinters in its larval stage.
