About Oenanthe oenanthe (Linnaeus, 1758)
Oenanthe oenanthe (Linnaeus, 1758), the northern wheatear, is larger than the European robin. It measures 14.5–16 cm (5.7–6.3 in) in length, has a 26–32 cm wingspan, and weighs 17–30 g. Both male and female northern wheatears share a white rump and white tail, marked with a black inverted T-shaped pattern at the tail tip. Summer males have grey upperparts, a buff throat, and black wings and face mask. By autumn, the male looks similar to the female, except it retains its black wings. Females have pale brown upperparts, buff underparts, and darker brown wings. The male produces a whistling, crackly song. Its common call is a characteristic chat-like chack noise, and it uses this same sound as its flight call.
