Its leaves are aromatic, glabrous, and feature a sheath that covers the stem. The leaflets are divided into lobes and have a crinkled texture. The cultivar 'Flamingo' has distinctive colorful pink leaf edges. This plant grows wild in moist environments, including along streams and on the edges of ponds. It is classified as an officially invasive species in multiple U.S. states. While many other species in the genus Oenanthe are extremely toxic, Oenanthe javanica is edible. It is cultivated for culinary use across China, India, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam, as well as in Italy, where its new spring growth is enjoyed as a vegetable.
