About Oedoparena glauca (Coquillett, 1900)

Oedoparena glauca (Coquillett, 1900) is a common coastal fly belonging to the family Dryomyzidae. It is the only known dipterous predator of barnacles. This is a Nearctic species of fly, with a distribution ranging from Central California to Alaska. In terms of ecology, adult Oedoparena glauca deposit their eggs on the operculum of barnacles. Fly larvae consume several barnacles as they develop. After development is complete, pupariation occurs inside an empty barnacle shell. Adult flies emerge during the morning low tide. It is possible that other species in the genus Oedoparena share this similar lifestyle.
